January 2015 Update on Google Fiber

Posted on November 3, 2015 at 2:53 PM by Communications Office

Google Fiber announced today, January 27, that it has selected four metropolitan areas in the southeast region of the nation for its next phase of expansion of its high speed fiber network. The core cities are Charlotte and Raleigh-Durham in North Carolina; Atlanta, Georgia; and Nashville, Tennessee.

Over the past year, the City of San José and other Silicon Valley cities have been working with Google Fiber to provide information that the company requested for its consideration of expansion. Google had invited 34 cities in nine metro areas across the nation for this review.

Although San José and other Silicon Valley cities were not included in this first phase of Google Fiber network expansion, the company indicated that it intended to continue to work with cities in the five other metro areas under consideration in order resolve issues related to future network design, engineering and construction, and permitting. Google representatives expect to provide more updates later this year.

The City of San José is continuing to work closely and positively with Google Fiber to assess a wide range of technical issues associated with Google’s future determination about expanding its fiber network to our community. At this time, however, there has been no decision by Google regarding its schedule for making that determination.
