Here is information about building permit fees, impact fees, construction taxes, payment methods, refunds and other related information. 

CREDIT CARD SURCHARGE:  Effective May 01, 2024, credit card payments are subject to a third-party service fee of 2.66%. To avoid this fee, see alternate methods of payment below.

building and structure Permits Fee schedule

The Building and Structure Permits Fee Schedule shows the fees in effect as of August 12, 2024 for the review of building plans and permit issuance, as collected by the Building Division, Public Works Department, and Fire Protection Bureau. Page 29 of the document shows the International Code Council (ICC) Construction Tax valuation rates effective July 1, 2024. Some projects submitted prior to July 1 without yet paying permit fees may be subject to additional construction taxes per the updated valuation rates.

METHODS of payment

Note: Fees of $100,000 or more must use a check or wire transfer. 

  • Pay online with credit card or eCheck. Credit card payments are subject to a third-party service fee of 2.66%. To avoid this fee, use an eCheck or other method of payment.

  • Pay by wire transfer. Instructions:  Email PermitCashier@sanjoseca.gov and provide this info: a) Wire amount; b) Wire date; and c) Invoice #
  • Pay by check. Pay at City Hall, First Floor Cashier (appointments are required) or mail check payment to:
