The City of San José Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services “Healthy Challenge Type 2 Diabetes Prevention” camps were, once again, a huge success. In partnership with the American Diabetes Association two diabetes prevention camps were held for children ages 8 to 15-years-old. The first camp was held at Mayfair Community Center from July 10 through 14, with the second at Seven Trees Community Center from July 31 through Aug. 4. Campers learned about diabetes, nutrition, the importance of exercise, and about "Fiber 5," a system which encourages campers to read food labels and choose foods that have at least 5 grams of fiber. They also learned how to make healthy snacks at home like fruit yogurt parfaits and hummus dip. The camp was a great success and PRNS looks forward to continuing this partnership.
