Thermostats

Photo of a mercury thermostatThe Issue

Older and non-digital thermostats contain mercury, a highly toxic liquid metal which poses a public health and environmental threat. Mercury thermostats can no longer be disposed of in the trash.  Each mercury thermostat contains on average 3 grams of mercury. Mercury is a potent neurotoxin that bioaccumulates in human and fish tissue.

What You Can Do

If you are replacing a mercury thermostat, make sure it gets recycled.  You can properly recycle your mercury thermostats for FREE at the County of Santa Clara Household Hazardous Waste Program.
