San Jose Needs Your Help to Be Selected for Google’s Community Broadband Fiber Project
Google is looking for communities to test ultra-high speed broadband networks across the country. And, San Jose wants to be one of them! The network would deliver Internet speeds more than 100 times faster than what most Americans have access to today, over 1 gigabit per second. As you can imagine, it would present fantastic opportunities for residents and businesses alike—by attracting businesses and jobs to our community, enhancing the quality of life for our citizens and improving our schools, health care system and government agencies.
As a matter of fact, we have assembled a multi-city department working group to address the application. Given that San Jose is a city of innovative early-adopters, of all technology, and our current high use of computers and the internet, it makes sense for Google to consider San Jose for their project and use us as a model for other municipalities to follow. Our diversity is a plus as well. Our population represents nationalities and ethnicities from throughout the world. What other American city would offer Google input on their project from so many different people?
We know this will be a very competitive process for Google. But, this diversity factor could be a big plus when they consider other areas and applications. And, of course, our global business community fuels invention and innovation throughout the world. What we work on here impacts companies and their products from Beijing to Berlin. Fiber-to-the-premise networks will serve as an engine for business and economic development and help maintain our spirit of entrepreneurism and leadership in innovation.
To be part of this test, San Jose is going forward with an application that would use our City for the start to build ultra-high speed broadband networks in communities across America. Google’s vision of a fiber-to-the-home network with open access is inline with the hope to connect every home and business in San Jose with a fiber broadband network. To make sure San Jose is a top contender, we need your help.

*Google announced that as of March 1, they will no longer support IE6 on its Google Docs and Google Sites services. IE users will have to upgrade to at least version 7 if they want to use those products, as many other companies have already stopped supporting older browsers like Internet Explorer 6.0 as well as browsers that are not supported by their own manufacturers.
Google set the baseline for other browsers at Firefox 3.0 or higher, Chrome 4.0 or higher, and Safari 3.0 or higher. "...you may find that from March 1, key functionality within these products--as well as new Docs and Sites features--won't work properly in older browsers," Google said.
