ASSOCIATE ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN (3713)

CLASS PURPOSE
   Under general supervision, performs a variety of sub-professional engineering, architectural and landscape architectural work of moderate difficulty in design, drafting, project management, traffic engineering, maintenance engineering and office engineering. Performs related work as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS
   This class is the journey level class in the Engineering Technical series. Incumbents of this class perform a variety of sub-professional engineering, architectural, and landscape architectural work in design drafting, traffic engineering, and office engineering, under the general supervision of a higher level employee, as assigned.
   This class differs from the next higher class of Senior Engineering Technician in that incumbents of the latter class may supervise a technical unit and perform sub-professional engineering work.

Education
   Successful completion of high school, or possession of a General Educational Development (G.E.D.) Certificate, or California Proficiency Certificate.

Experience
   Four (4) years of increasingly responsible sub-professional engineering/technical support experience of which two (2) years must have been in a position comparable to the level of a City of San José Engineering Technician II or close equivalent.

Acceptable Substitutions

Licenses/Certificates
   Possession of a valid driver’s license authorizing operation of a motor vehicle in the State of California.
