    Education: Investing in Our Future

A great city must have quality schools and Mayor Reed has pledged to work in partnership with local school districts and the community to enhance the educational experience for all San José students. These collaborative efforts serve as critical investments in the future of our children and our community.

  • In 2009, Mayor Reed and Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools Charles Weis, Ph.D. launched SJ2020: a collaborative effort to eliminate the achievement gap in San José and ensure that all students achieve grade-level proficiency by the end of the decade.
  • Mayor Reed has helped rejuvenate the Schools/City Collaborative, which has brought stakeholders together to increase joint use of facilities, enhance student safety and recruit new teachers.
  • Mayor Reed and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group developed a pilot program in 2008 to bring local technology professionals into the classroom to promote the importance of science and math.
  • In 2007, Mayor Reed worked with the Silicon Valley Education Foundation to launch the “Teach Here, Live Here” program, which helped several first-time teachers rent an apartment or home in San José.

SJ Schools Recognized for Efforts in Eliminating Achievement Gap

StudentsPOSTED: 2/15/2012
In January, Mayor Reed joined the Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools, Dr. Charles Weis, in recognizing 20 local elementary, middle, and high schools with "2020 Vision" awards External Link for their progress toward eliminating the achievement gap. At the event, the leaders also released the 2012 Annual Report PDF, which details progress made on aspects of the SJ2020 initiative.

SJ2020 was launched in 2009 by the City of San José, County Office of Education, educators, business leaders and community organizations to eliminate the achievement gap in San Jose by the year 2020. In San Jose, nearly half of all public school students tested are not proficient in their grade-level skills.
