“2012 will be a great year of Hope, Optimism and Recovery,” Mayor Reed said in closing, “the year in which we overcome our greatest challenges; the year in which we finally turn the corner on a decade of budget deficits and service cuts; and the year that we put San José back on the path to becoming a great city.”

“The people of San José recognize that cutting services to pay for cost increases is a formula for disaster,” Mayor Reed said. “With the overwhelming approval of Measures V and W last November, the voters have given us a mandate to get control of runaway costs. Now it is up to all of us, the City Council and our 11 bargaining units, to figure out a way save our City from the cancer of cost increases."

2010 State of the City Address "To some, it seems that after nine years of coping with annual shortfalls, we are at the end of our rope. I am reminded of President Franklin Roosevelt, who had to battle both the Great Depression and World War II. He said, 'When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.'"

2009 State of the City Address "People often express their concerns to me about the difficulty of being Mayor in these tough times. While I don’t underestimate the magnitude of our challenges, I would not trade my problems for the problems of any other big-city Mayor in the country."

2008 State of the City Address "Last year was a great year for me. Being the Mayor of San José is the best job in the world and I am blessed to have been elected to lead this City. Having been described by the Mercury News as “the normally placid-to-comatose Mayor Reed,” I want to let you know there is no truth to the rumor that I have asked Body Worlds to find me a double to sit though our long Council meetings."

2007 Inauguration "An Inauguration is by its nature a new beginning and a time to look forward. But as we look forward to a better and brighter future for San José, let us not forget the service and the sacrifice of those who came before us and those who make this day possible."
