MAYOR REED AND COUNCILMEMBER CHU ANNOUNCE FORMATION OF NORTH SAN JOSE TASKFORCE

July 24, 2007

Neighborhoods Planning Taskforce to Help Implement NSJ Vision 2030 Plan

(San José, CA) – Today, San José Councilmember Kansen Chu, joined by San José Mayor Chuck Reed announced the formation of a neighborhoods planning taskforce for North San José. The taskforce, called the North San José Neighborhoods Planning Taskforce is a 21 member body comprised of neighborhood, corporate, and developer representatives who will be responsible for producing a neighborhoods master plan that helps to implement the North San Jose Vision 2030 vision plan. The plan sets forth a vision for the development of 32,000 residential units, 26.7 million square feet of industrial use, and 1.7 million square feet of commercial and retail use.

“Growth has to be complemented by good planning.” said Chu. “The formation of the North
San José Neighborhoods Planning Taskforce is a reflection of that principle.”

The taskforce will be responsible for producing a neighborhoods plan that advises and supports staff efforts on the preparation of an implementation plan. This plan is intended to guide the design and construction of parks, schools, retail, public safety, and community serving amenities. The effort will include the selection of potential sites for public amenities and identification of funding mechanisms to acquire the site.

“I want to thank Mayor Reed for assisting my office in these first 30 days, especially with this taskforce.” said Chu. “The taskforce has a large responsibility on its shoulders and we expect them to be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem.”

“Planning for neighborhoods is an important step for the future of North San José as we build out our vision for the area.” said San José Mayor Chuck Reed. “Having a wide range of stakeholders involved will help our staff integrate the elements of good neighborhoods into projects going through the permitting process.”

Approved in June 2005, the revised North San José Area Development Policy created a plan for the development of research and development, office, residential, and retail space and a $570 million infrastructure improvement package to support a 25 year project. North San José area has become the preeminent location for driving industrial uses within the City of San José. The core of this area, referred to as “Innovation Triangle,” is the industrial park land located within San José north of US Highway 101, west of Interstate 880 or Coyote Creek and south of State Route 237. This area houses many high-tech industries, including some leading corporations that have located their headquarters along the North First Street and Zanker Road corridors. The area also includes a large number of supporting industrial uses and a smaller amount of commercial and residential development.
