COUNCILMEMBER CHU TO FUND 1 OF 18 LITTLE SAIGON BANNERS

July 29, 2008

Councilmember Chu to Fund 1 of 18 Little Saigon Banners

(San José, CA) – An agreement was recently reached by the City of San José and representatives of the Little Saigon Foundation to place a total of eighteen banners in the San José retail area along Story Road. In celebration of community unity, Councilmember Chu announced today that he will be funding one of these banners and helping to facilitate dialog for the installation of a permanent gateway sign in the future.

“As a longtime supporter of Little Saigon, I am extremely pleased the Vietnamese Community can now move forward to display the banners,” said Councilmember Kansen Chu. “The Vietnamese Community had fought long and hard for the remembrance of their homeland in the City of San José through the name ‘Little Saigon.’ The installation of the Little Saigon banners not only is a celebration of a vibrant retail area but also will be a visible testament to the identity and solidarity of the Vietnamese-American community in San Jose.”

San José has the largest Vietnamese-American population in any city in the world. The Little Saigon Banner Agreement will be one step closer in properly acknowledging and recognizing their contributions to the greater San José community. “I believe funding a Little Saigon banner is an important first step in celebrating Vietnamese-American residents and their contributions in San José,” added Councilmember Chu. “I look forward to facilitating the positive dialogue that will take place in the near future regarding a permanent gateway sign across Story Road.”
