Councilmember Chu Calls on San Jose City Council to Support
Renaming of Main Post Office in Honor of Gordon Chan
(San José, CA) Today,
San José City Council approved to support the effort
to rename the San José Main Post Office on Lundy Avenue
to the Gordon N. Chan Post Office. This effort was in collaboration
with Congressmember Mike Honda to commemorate the accomplishments
of an important Berryessa resident who had strived for an
improved quality of life for all in San José.
As one of the most prominent Chinese American
leaders in Santa Clara County, Gordon Chan was an agricultural
pioneer and community activist. He had strong ties in the
Berryessa area; his family’s ‘Chan Nursery’
was a prominent business in District 4 for many years. Gordon
Chan was also involved in many organizations that strived
to improve the Santa Clara County in many aspects. "Renaming
the Main Post Office on Lundy Avenue to the Gordon N. Chan
Post Office will serve as a remembrance and acknowledgement
of his community activism," said Councilmember Chu.
Per House requirements, support of a resolution
by the San Jose City Council will serve as community support
for Congressmember Mike Honda as he will present a bill to
the House of Representatives to approve the renaming. "It
is an honor to commemorate the achievements of Gordon Chan,
who dedicated his life to community service, charity, and
civic engagement," stated Councilmember Chu, "It
will be my sincere hope that the remembrance of Gordon Chan
will live on so that future generations will always be inspired
by his generosity."
