In order to deal with rising energy
costs for streetlights and the lack of resources available
to adequately maintain and operate the streetlights, the Department
of Transportation has opted to shutoff a number of streetlights.
A $77,000 General Fund ongoing reduction strategy was adopted
in the 2008/2009 Fiscal Year to shutoff 900 (1.5%) of the
streetlights throughout the City.
The following list has streetlights
in Council District 4 that were part of the implementation
plan and were shut off for this fiscal year. The streetlights
are identified by the streetlight number located on the streetlight.
If your streetlight is NOT on the list below, there is a possibility
that your streetlight needs to be repaired. Please call Department
of Transportation at (408) 277-5517, email at street.lights@sanjoseca.gov,
or visit http://www.sanjoseca.gov/transportation/s_streetlights.htm
The City will continue to respond to
streetlight outages and other reported street lighting problems
in the same manner as before. Typically, about 85% of streetlight
outages are repaired within 7 business days.
The Department
of Transportation, Police Department, and the Office of Economic
Development worked together in identifying the locations where
lights are turned off. Lights adjacent to bus stops, cross
walks, and busy intersections are not being turned off, and
lights in major retail or economic development areas are also
not being affected. The lights are along major arterial roads
theoughout the City where crime activity and impacts to public
safety will not likely increase due to regular vehicle traffic,
public activity and visibility.
In the meantime, the Department is
leading a Citywide effort to work with the lighting industry
and local stakeholders to develop and implement lower energy,
smart street lighting technologies. The City is aiming for
technologies to advance and become available for wide-scale
use over the next 1-3 years.
Please check back often, this
list will be updated if there are additional shutoffs.
