The Mexican Heritage Plaza is a 55,000 square-foot cultural center with state-of-the art theatrical venues, a Smithsonian-affliate gallery space and luscious thematic gardens that serve as a regional resource for cultural programming and education. Built in partnership with the City of San José and the San José Redevelopment Agency, the Plaza is one of the largest Latino cultural centers in the nation.
The Plaza de San Jose is the result of a $73.5 million revitalization investment into the historically blighted shopping center at the intersection of Story and King Roads. Target, Starbucks, FAMSA, and Ritmo Latino are among the exciting mix of mainstream retailers and local and ethnic businesses. Plaza de San José also has spacious public plazas, vibrant walkways, and lively public art.
The new, 26,000 square-foot Dr. Roberto Cruz - Alum Rock Library replaced the 6,890 square-foot county-operated Alum Rock Branch Library. The new, library has the look and feel of an upscale bookstore. The state-of-the-art facility offers an Internet Cafe, community living room with fireplace, technology lab, family learning center, group and individual quiet study areas, and a community room that can accommodate 100 persons.
The National Hispanic University (NHU) was established in 1981 to serve the needs of Hispanics, women, and minorities. The Bay Area Bilingual Education League (BABEL) and Dr.Roberto Cruz helped shape the framework of a University that catered to the needs of a variety of Hispanic learners, by identifying high expectations, role models and academic support systems similar to those at historically Black Colleges and Universities.
