San Jose Fire Department response to County Jail

Dear Neighbors,

This past April, I drafted a memo about some of my concerns regarding the San Jose Fire Department’s (SJFD) response to the County Jail located in Downtown San Jose.  Although the jail is a county facility, the SJFD responds to calls of service at the jail.

Because the jail is a unique facility, it is important to have policies, procedures and protocols in place for jail staff and the SJFD to follow.

My memo directed our staff to work with the other agencies to improve the current criteria the City has in place for responding to the jail.

A copy of my memo is here for you. (Procedures, Protocol & Policies regarding the County Jail)

This issue will return to the Public Safety Strategic Support Committee on September 18, 2008.

Warm Regards,

Councilmember Pierluigi Oliverio

SJPD - POLICE Information - Updates

Youth Guide on Police, Safety, and Crime is now available.

A Student’s Guide to Police Practices is a booklet that was written with young people in mind.  It explains basic police practices, important legal issues, and laws that affect young people in San José.  New sections discuss issues like:  gang violence, hate crimes, internet safety, and dating abuse.  The guide contains suggestions on what to do (and NOT do) if stopped by a police officer.  There is also advice on how to avoid being victimized by crime.  Valuable services are described in the resource section.  The guide may be downloaded in English, Spanish, or Vietnamese at www.sanjoseca.gov/IPA.

Please call the Independent Police Auditor’s office at (408) 794-6226 to get a printed copy or a version on CD.

You may also request a presentation for your school, church, community group, or local agency.

GRAFITTI

"Graffiti Tracking Database"

The San Jose Police Department has added another high-tech tool in the fight against graffiti vandalism. About one year ago, San Jose Police launched a grant-funded, county-wide law enforcement database used to track graffiti and the subjects who commit vandalism.   On July 22, 2009 an additional element will be added to allow the public to upload graffiti photographs and information to the department's web site. These photographs and information will be reviewed by investigators and then automatically added to the database. This collaborative effort between law enforcement and concerned citizens will result in a greater number of incidents being recorded and tracked beyond what is reported through traditional means.   The goal of this effort will be to reduce graffiti incidents by increasing arrests of offenders and to give an accurate account of the damage committed. With an increase in incidents being recorded and tracked, court restitution orders should reflect all of the damage an offender has caused.
