I. San Jose Prepared! Classes

Module 1
Home Preparedness and Neighborhood Organization
Discusses the impact of disasters on our homes and community.

Describes steps that can be taken to avert or minimize damage in our homes and neighborhood from disasters.

Introduces the role of San Jose Prepared! participants in disaster response; as well as team organization, decision-making and other knowledge and skills that are part of an effective C.E.R.T. neighborhood group.

Module 2
Fire Suppression and Household Hazardous Materials
Explains the basic concepts of fire chemistry, the dangers of fire and how to identify and reduce potential fire hazards.

Describes what to do when confronted with fire, including hands-on instruction in basic firefighting and suppression techniques.

Discusses how to identify where hazardous materials might exists in your community. Describes ways to minimize hazardous materials in your home.

Module 3
Disaster Medicine and Psychology

Introduces the principles of medical triage and treatment strategies for life-threatening conditions.

Explains how to perform a "head-to-toe" patient assessment, as well as establishing a suitable treatment area.

Addresses public health concerns such as hygiene and sanitation within the treatment area.

Discusses emotional and psychological post-disaster issues and techniques for stress management.

Module 4
Light Search and Rescue
Describes the basic concepts used in search and rescue.

Discusses issues such as setting search and rescue priorities and situation "size-up", rescuer safety and damage assessment.

Participants receive hands-on instruction in basic techniques such as victim search triangulation, debris cribbing and lifting and victim removal.

Module 5
Terrorism Awareness
Introduces the subject of Terrorism and provides an overview of some of the methods used by terrorists.

Describes the history and foundation of Emergency Preparedness.

Primary focus is on helping you develop an awareness of the possibility of future terrorist attacks in the United States and provides information that you can use to enhance your chances of survival.
