A18 Annual Self Monitoring Plan (SMP) Reports

Pond A18 had served as a salt evaporator pond for many decades.  At 856 acres, it was the largest salt pond in the South San Francisco Bay, However, the pond is no longer used to produce salt.

The San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant purchased Pond A18 from Cargill, Inc. in 2005. Just prior to the purchase, on February 17th, 2005, hydraulic gates were opened and Bay water began to be circulated through the Pond. The circulation of Bay water through Pond A18 continues to this day and is regulated under the terms of a Waste Discharge Requirement (WDR # R2-2005-0003) issued by the San Francisco Bay Water Pollution Control Board. The WDR requires water quality monitoring of pond discharge during the dry season, between May 1st through October 31st, and submission of an annual report.
