Slow the FlowTake your students on a field trip to the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge Environmental Education Center in Alviso (EEC). Through classroom presentations, teacher-led activities and a field trip to the EEC, students explore the concepts of water use, wastewater treatment, habitat preservation, watershed stewardship, and recycled water. Curriculum is aligned to California content standards. Wonders of Our Water Works Plant ToursOn this tour of the San Jose/Santa Clara Water Pollution Control Plant, students in grades four through 12 can explore the largest tertiary wastewater treatment facility on the West Coast. They’ll learn how wastewater from 1.4 million residents and 17,000 business sewer connections is cleaned to almost drinking water standards, protecting human health and the environment. The tour can include a visit to the Don Edwards San Francisco Bay National Wildlife Refuge – the largest urban wildlife refuge in the nation.
