Facts About Polystyrene Foam Disposable Food Ware

  • Plastics are produced to last a very long time. Disposable items made of plastics do not decompose or degrade, thus, they are persistent in our creeks, rivers, and oceans.
  • Fifteen percent of all trash and litter in the storm drain system is expanded polystyrene according to a study by the California Department of Transportation.
  • Roughly 80 percent of marine debris originates from land-based sources.
  • A study of beach debris at 43 sites along the Orange County coast found polystyrene foam was the second most abundant form of beach debris.

 

There are over 30,000 street storm drains in San José!
