Where
water goes from your home
One
way creeks get polluted from our homes is when rain or sprinkler
water washes pollutants off of sidewalks, driveways, curbs, or
yards. These pollutants may be spilled motor oil, rinse-water
from paintbrushes, swimming pool water, soapy water used to clean
our cars, chemicals we use to make our lawns look better, and
even plain dirt. Even the pollutants that dry up and disappear
are just waiting for rain or excess sprinkler water to wash them
into the gutter and down the street to a storm drain.
Water
that flows to storm drains and creeks NEVER GOES TO A TREATMENT
PLANT! Storm drains carry pollutants from our neighborhoods into
creeks, and your local creek flows directly to the Bay. The crayfish,
fish, frogs, ducks and birds that live in our creeks and the Bay
store up certain chemicals in their bodies, and the people who
eat those animals may be harmed.
Water
doesn't just go away,
it drains to our creeks and bay!
