The Area

Japantown San Jose is one of three recognized historic Japantowns left in California.  Its rich cultural history is revered and honored in its historic monuments and restored buildings. Japanese Americans share this treasured district with the rich cultural heritage of many ethnicities,  most noteably, the Chinese, who founded the original town of Heinlenville in the late 1800.  This delightful neighborhood also boasts Mexican, Cuban, Korean, Hawaiian restaurants, a Buddhist Temple, a Filipino Community Center, and many Japanese restaurants and shops.

Japantown is undergoing a transformation with the development of the City Corporation Yard into a mixed use development with retail, housing, and community amenities.  Check out "Development" on this site for more information.
