Fiscal Responsibility
By practicing fiscal responsibility, Mayor Reed has worked to preserve core city services when faced with chronic budget deficits.

Redevelopment Agency Budget Message

Mayor Reed typically releases a separate Redevelopment Agency Budget Message during the fall (after the completion of the city budget process in June). By waiting until the County’s annual property assessments have been completed, the Redevelopment Agency is able to prepare its budget using more accurate revenue projections.

In his Redevelopment Agency budget messages, Mayor Reed has placed a priority on projects that will spur economic growth, create jobs and generate new tax revenues. These types of projects offer a high return on our investment and provide numerous benefits to the people and businesses of San José. This focus has become even more important as the Redevelopment Agency continues to grapple with continuing budget raids by the State of California.

Given the uncertainty around the State of California's actions to eliminate all redevelopment agencies and the recession's impact on the agency's funding, Mayor Reed did not release a separate Redevelopment Agency budget message for FY 2011-2012. Instead, budget direction for the Redevelopment Agency was included as part of his June Budget Message PDF (see pages 13-15).
