Education: Investing in Our Future

Too many San José students are dropping out in middle and high school. Education is the key to enhancing our children’s future as well as maintaining a strong workforce, economy and community in the years to come. As a result, Mayor Reed has:

  • Rejuvenated the Schools/City Collaborative, which has helped increase joint use of facilities, enhance student safety and recruit new teachers.
  • Partnered with Santa Clara County Superintendent of Schools Charles Weis, Ph.D. and a broad coalition of stakeholders to launch SJ2020, an ambitious initiative to eliminate the achievement gap in San José by ensuring that all students achieve grade-level proficiency.

Education Programs

High Tech is COOL! The Mayor's Office and the Silicon Valley Leadership Group are working with the Role Model Program to bring a new initiative to San José schools. The High Tech is COOL! program will match successful adult role model volunteers from local high tech companies with individual classrooms in San José. The goal of the program is to increase the interest in math and science and demonstrate the potential careers that can be available to these students.

Teach Here. Live Here. The City of San José in conjunction with the Silicon Valley Education Foundation created the Teach Here, Live Here (THLH) program to provide rental assistance to teachers in the City of San José.

The THLH program is designed to assist San José’s 19 school districts in addition to the County Office of Education, recruit new teachers especially those in the disciplines of math, science, and special education. THLH provides grants to first time teachers to help them begin their careers in San José. The program will also provide grants to established teachers who are moving to San José to continue their careers here. Click here for more information.

Schools/City Collaborative. A partnership with the City of San José, its school districts, the County Office of Education, and additional education stakeholders. The goal of the Collaborative is to address and solve educational issues on a continual and ongoing basis by opening up a dialogue not only between the City of San José and its school districts, but also between the various school districts themselves.
