    A Great Place to Live, Work and Raise a Family

Over the years, San José has been consistently honored with a number of distinguished accolades.
  • San José consistently has among the lowest crime rates among large U.S. cities (Federal Bureau of Investigation Uniform Crime Reports) and is regularly ranked as one of the nation’s safest cities.
  • San José households have the highest median disposable income in the nation (America’s Most Livable Cities, 2004).
  • San José has the second-highest median household income in the United States for cities with a population of more than 250,000 (U.S. Census Bureau, 2007).
  • San José is home to the largest concentration of technology expertise in the world--more than 6,600 technology companies employing more than 254,000 people (City of San José Office of Economic Development, 2009).
  • San José leads the nation in patent generation, and is home to more patent holders than San Diego and Los Angeles combined (ipIQ, 2005).
  • One-third of all venture capital invested in the United States is invested in companies in the San Jose area - $7.1 billion in 2008 alone (City of San José - Office of Economic Development, 2008).
  • For more than a decade, San José has had one of the best recycling rates in the nation, with an overall landfill diversion rate of 62% (City of San José - Environmental Services Department. 2009).
