City Reaches Tentative Agreements with 3 More Employee Unions

Press Conference of Tentative Aggreements

On March 23, three more employee bargaining units agreed to pay and benefit concessions,
which included a
10% reduction in total compensation in addition to workers' comp and vacation sellback reforms. The agreements cover 623 city employees belonging to the Association of Engineers and Architects (AEA), the Association of Maintenance Supervisory Personnel (AMSP), and the City Association of Management Personnel (CAMP). Read the tentative agreements

Earlier in the week, the City Council had approved an agreement with the city's firefighters' union that also included a 10 percent reduction in total compensation. All four bargaining units agreed to continue negotiating with the City regarding retirement reform, sick leave payouts and other outstanding issues.

SSICity Seeks Additional Funding for Safe Summer Initiative

Safe Summer Initative Programs

On March 28, city leaders kicked off a campaign to raise money to help keep the city's Safe Summer Initiative fully funded this summer. The program offers grants to organizations that provide fun, safe and constructive activities for thousands of at-risk youth. Learn more

"The Safe Summer Initiative has been a key tool that has helped us reduce gang activity in San Jose over the past three summers," Mayor Reed said. "However, given our city's fiscal problems, we need to look for alternative ways to fund these kinds of programs that help keep our streets safe and our youth out of trouble."

During the announcement, Readers' Digest presented the City of San Jose with a $1,000 check for the Safe Summer Initiative as part of the publication's "We Hear You America" campaign.  The City has also received generous contributions from the Santa Clara County District Attorney's Office ($75,000) and Boston Properties ($5,000). City leaders are hoping to raise an additional $50,000 for this year's program.

Donations in support of the Safe Summer Initiative can be made via the San Jose Parks Foundation. You can also help San Jose compete for up to $40,000 in additional funds from Readers' Digest by going online and "cheering" for San Jose.

Share Your Input on the Proposed Area Code Change

Area CodeThe California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has announced that the South Bay will be receiving a new area code: 669. The new area code is necessary to address a shortage of available 408 numbers, which are expected to run out by the end of 2012. The CPUC is currently considering two options for introducing the new area code:

  • Geographic split: The area assigned to the 408 area code will be split into smaller regions. One region will keep the 408 area code and the other will be assigned the 669 area code.

  • All-services overlay: The 669 area code will be assigned only to new telephone numbers. Existing phone numbers would retain the 408 area code. For all calls, individuals will need to dial 1+ the area code and telephone number (Note: the City of San Jose has adopted a resolution supporting this option).

For more information, visit the California Public Utilities Commission website.

Residents are encouraged to share their input on these options by calling (866) 340-6147, sending an e-mail, or writing a letter to CPUC, Public Advisor, 320 W. 4th St., Suite 500, Los Angeles, CA 90013.
