GREEN VISION UPDATEGreen Vision Tree
   October marks the one year anniversary of Mayor Reed's announcement of San Jose's Green Vision, an ambitious 15-year plan to improve the environment and stimulate the local economy through the clean tech sector.
   The City Council approved has a new Green Building Policy on October 7, a major accomplishment that will further the City's environmental goals.

MAYOR REED WELCOMES FIRST GRANDSON
   On August 16, Mayor Reed celebrated his 60th birthday in a new fashion - as a grandfather.
   Mayor Reed's daughter, Kim Campbell gave birth to Colin Reed-Campbell who now shares a birthday with his grandfather.

Tesla CarZERO-EMISSION CAR COMPANY TO ADD 1,000 JOBS TO SAN JOSE
   Tesla Motors, the nation's leading electric car company, has reached an agreement with the City of San Jose to locate its headquarters, manufacturing, and research and development campus in San Jose.
   Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger
commented on Tesla's announcement by stating "I congratulate San Jose for helping Tesla, a cutting-edge car company, bring green manufacturing jobs to California - which will help build our state's economy for the future."
   Tesla Motors plans to build a $250 million facility located at Zanker Road and Highway 237 in North San Jose. Construction is planned to begin in the summer of 2009 with the first vehicles finishing the assembly line in late 2010.
   The facility will employ around 1,000 workers, a major step in accomplishing the San Jose Green Vision goal of creating 25,000 Clean Tech jobs in the city over the next 15 years. learn more>>

REVISED PLAN TO COMBAT GANG ACTIVITY
   Mayor Chuck Reed and members of the Mayor's Gang prevention Task Force released the Strategic Work Plan 2008-2011, entitled "Action Collaboration Transformation (ACT): A Plan to Break the Cycle of Youth Violence and Foster Hope." The plan was adopted by the San Jose City Council on September 23 with a 10-0 vote.
MGPTFSWP   The Strategic Work Plan was developed with input from more than 1,000 residents who attended five Town Hall Meetings that were hosted by Mayor Reed. The new plan promotes providing positive alternatives for youth, enhancing partnerships with the faith-based and private sector communities, and increasing prevention services to children as young as 6 and to girls and young women.
   Since taking office in 2007, Mayor Reed has increased the funding to the Mayor Gang Prevention Task Force by 33 percent, making the first increase to the program since 1999.

STUDENT GUIDE TO POLICE PRACTICES
    San Jose's Independent Police Auditor (IPA) has released a revised and expanded handbook to educate young people and their parents on basic police practices and important legal issues.IPA Student Guide
   The Student's Guide to Police Practices teaches children how to avoid being victimized by crime and offers suggestions on the best way to interact with police officers. It's goal is to help youth understand the law so that they can stay safe and make informed decision.
   The guide was originally published in 2003. The new version includes sections on cyber-bullying, hate crimes, and internet s
afety and was developed by the IPA in collaboration with the Police Department, Mayor's Gang Prevention Task Force, and community members.

BART TrainCTC & MTC FUNDING FOR BART
    On September 25, the California Transportation Commission voted to approve $239 million in state transportation funds for the BART extension from Warm Springs to Santa Clara County. These funds will be used to complete engineering for the southern BART extension and completes the total state funding of $760 million to bring BART to San Jose.
   "The BART extension will help complete a regional transportation system, a vital part of our economic future," said Mayor Reed. "With more than 98,000 projected riders each weekday, BART will provide an efficient way for Bay Area residents to commute while lessening our dependence on foreign oil and helping the environment."
