City of San Jose Census 2000
This page contains an overview description and downloadable files based on the major Census 2000 data releases by the Census Bureau.
Geographic data is an essential component to implementation and interpretation of Census 2000. The TIGER/Line® files are the Census Bureau's primary geographic data, and are designed for use with Geographic Information Systems (GIS). These files contain the boundaries of geographic units for tabulation of Census results, such as census tracts, block groups, and blocks. The TIGER/Line® files for the State of California were released on February 5, 2001. If you have GIS software, an ESRI shapefile of census tracts in the City of San Jose is available for download by clicking here. This file is a zipped file with a State Plane, NAD 83, California Zone III map projection. For questions concerning the GIS shapefile contact Michael Bills at (408) 535-7896.
The first Census 2000 data files released contain information required for local redistricting. The data includes a tabulation of total population by major race groups and Hispanic ethnicity. The redistricting data file for the State of California was released on March 30, 2001 and then subsequently used in redistricting of San Jose City Council Districts. A summary Excel table of the redistricting data set for the City of San Jose at the census tract level is available for download by clicking here.
Summary File 1 (SF 1) contains counts and basic cross-tabulations of "short form" information, or rather information collected from all people and housing units. This information includes age, gender, race and Hispanic ethnicity, household relationship, and whether the residence is owned or rented. The SF 1 data file for the State of California was released on August 8, 2001. SF 1 provided the source data for a Census Bureau Demographic Profile table (DP-1), which document served as a template for preparation of customized DP-1 tables for each San Jose City Council District. San Jose's DP-1 tables are available on the Citywide Profile page and Council District Profiles page of this website. The following summary Excel tables of information from the SF1 data set at the census tract level are available for download:
Age of Persons
Persons per Household
Housing Units by Occupancy and Tenure
Summary File 3 (SF 3) is the first release of information collected on a sample basis from the "long form" questionnaire. This information includes, among others, such characteristics as ancestry, language, education, income, and housing value. The SF3 data file for California was released on August 27, 2002. Census Bureau Demographic Profile tables (Tables DP-2 through DP-4) summarizing this information for the City of San Jose as a whole are available on the Citywide Profiles page of this website. The following summary Excel tables of information from the SF3 data set at the census tract level are available for download:

The Census Transportation Planning Package (CTPP) is a Census 2000 special tabulation providing information on commuters and commuting patterns. CTPP data was released in a series over the Fall 2002 to Fall 2004 time frame.
