About Public Works

Welcome to the Department of Public Works. As Director, I am pleased to say that the City of San José recently merged the former Public Works and General Services departments to form a new, more streamlined Department of Public Works (DPW). This merge was made to promote efficiencies and cost savings in the delivery of strategic services to our residents, clients and City partners.

The consolidation of our services better aligns the City resources that manage land development and the planning, design and construction of City infrastructure & facilities with the resources that maintain and manage many of those same facilities. This includes City buildings & regional facilities, like branch libraries and the Animal Shelter, as well as the fleet vehicles used by employees throughout the City in service to the community.

With over 460 dedicated employees, DPW is committed to providing quality services to San José residents and other City departments. The core services provided by our newly consolidated department are:

Animal Care Services - provides animal shelter and field services for San José residents and residents of Cupertino, Los Gatos, Milpitas and Saratoga.

Development Services - facilitates private development in the City of San Jose, ensuring that projects comply with applicable regulations and provide the necessary public infrastructure to support development including, streets, sidewalks, sewers, streetlights, street island & frontage landscaping and traffic signals.

Capital Project Services – includes the planning, design and construction of City site improvements, golf courses, parks, public buildings, roads & bridges, sanitary and storm sewers, trails and technical and engineering services that support the City's $1.75 billion 5-year Capital Improvement Program.

Fleet & facilities – provides operational services for City-owned building and supports services for City-owned vehicles at the six vehicle maintenance facilities.

Labor Compliance – implements the City of San José Living Wage and Prevailing Wage Policies.

Radio Communications procures, tests, inventories and distributes mobile radios, handpack radios, and base station equipment to City departments.

As we work to align our resources and optimize the services DPW provides to you, your feedback and comments are welcomed and appreciated. Please feel free to contact us with suggestions and comments.

Sincerely,
David Sykes
Director of Public Works
