Management Fellows—What do they do?

 

Management Fellows Meeting

Management Fellows perform a range of duties that often includes assisting the City Manager, Deputy City Managers, Department Directors, and other Senior Staff on high priority projects.  Management Fellows organize, develop, research, and evaluate City services and programs, and provide creative and innovative ideas to the City’s government.  Some examples of recent Management Fellow projects are as follows:

   
 
  • Researched, analyzed and made policy recommendations regarding the City’s possible implementation of a carbon-offset program as part of the award-winning Green Vision (Environmental Services Department).
  • Helped design, implement, secure funding and direct the City’s Heart Safe City project, aimed at increasing the successful deployment of AED devices citywide (Fire Department).
  • Co-facilitated the “City-School Collaborative” project, managing multiple stakeholders’ interests, conducting research on critical issues and making recommendations for action (City Manager’s Office).
  • Supported the City-Valley Transit Authority collaboration regarding plan design, implementation issues, public art, and fiscal challenges regarding the BART-to-San José project (Department of Transportation).
  • Developed the City’s municipal greenhouse gas reduction goals (Environmental Services)
  • Prepared a request for qualifications (RFQ) and coordinated a public outreach process for a citywide Aquatics Master Plan (Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services)
  • Assisted in the development of the City's Urban Forest Master Plan (Department of Transportation)
  • Analyzed the cost effectiveness of the current citywide 10-year/100,000-mile vehicle replacement policy (General Services Department)
  • Researched, developed and made recommendations to the City Council for a Citywide Grants Management Process (City Manager’s Office)
  • Participated in community meetings, interviewed neighborhood leaders, and assembled original research to make recommendations to the City Council regarding a Citywide Neighborhood Commission (Redevelopment Agency)
  • Conducted account analyses, supported the Business Tax to Integrated Billing System (IBS), and made recommendations related to service delivery improvemnts for citywide cashiering/payment processing (Finance)
  • Prepared a strategy and plan to guide the City’s implementation of green building elements in city-owned buildings (General Services Department)
  • Tracked state and federal housing-related legislation to determine their potential impact on the City (Housing Department)
