High School Students—Annual Job Shadow Day

Annual Job Shadow Day

If you’re a student, take this test question…

True or false:
Nearly 1/3 of the San José City workforce will be eligible to retire within the next 5 years.

Answer: TRUE!

As a local junior high or high school student, you may not yet be old enough to fill this leadership gap…but one day you will be! Therefore, the City is working diligently to encourage YOU to consider a future career in local government—particularly here at the City of San José.

Please allow us to give you a taste of City Hall through our Annual Job Shadow Day program!

Who: The City of San José is proud to partner annually with Junior Achievement Silicon Valley and local schools to give students a real-time City Hall experience with leading local government professionals.

What: It’s our Annual Citywide Job Shadow Day! Students are introduced in a fun, hands-on way to the broad spectrum of exciting City careers and the meaningful impacts they make on the residents of San José.

When: Happening each February, the City of San José now brings over one hundred students from various junior high and high school classes to spend the day learning cool stuff related to local government jobs and have fun with City staff from all different departments.

Where: Everywhere we offer municipal services: at San José City Hall, at our Fire Stations, at the Fire Dispatch Center, at our partner Recycling Centers, at the Santa Clara Superior Court, at the Water Pollution Control Plant, at Police Stations, in Council Chambers, at the San José Mineta International Airport, at cutting-edge affordable housing developments, at the City’s Traffic Management Center, at the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Library, on Downtown Redevelopment walking tours…everywhere!

Why: Studies show that most young people have had limited exposure to the variety of careers in local government. The City of San Jose seeks to attract the best and brightest of its local talent pool now and in the future, and this is one way to seed the minds of our young people with knowledge of public service professions.

We hope to see you at our next Annual Job Shadow Day!
