The City has all kinds of programs and events to help Interns learn about opportunities while having a lot of fun at the same time. Learn more about student intern events from Ladan Mahini, recent Human Resources Intern, who also organized the 2nd Annual "Are you in?" Intern Networking Event and the first Intern Recongnition BBQ.

The intern mentoring program is a new and exciting pilot program available for ALL interns. The purpose of the Citywide Pilot Intern Mentoring Program is to provide additional support, resources, and mentoring for the talented group of interns in the City of San José. Since one third of our current workforce is eligible to retire in less than five years, we want to “build the bench” by mentoring interns and give them more exposure to public sector careers. Interns will be able to either choose their mentor or be matched up with a Mentor that fits their needs. This program will assist interns by helping them figure out future career goals, receive coaching on what they need to do to prepare to be a great candidate for an ideal job (for example: interview process, resumes, where to find the jobs, who to meet, etc.), get support on how to deal with day to day problems they might be facing, and ultimately to receive mentoring on how to work within the City of San José.

In a large organization such as the City of San José, interns have expressed the interest to connect with other interns and staff outside of their assignments for social and professional development opportunities. Interns connected with past interns who are current City employees in order to gather ideas for potential career paths. This event also allowed the City to gather feedback and survey data from the interns in attendance. Approximately 80 interns and 25 City staff participated in the 2nd Annual “Are You In?” Event. Attendees enjoyed refreshments, a keynote speech from Deputy City Manager Norberto Duenas, an interactive speed coaching component with various City staff, and special guest speakers from both the City and SJSU, including Dr. Terry Christensen and Dr. Michael Fallon.
