San José's
bronze-level "Bicycle Friendly Communities" award was reaffirmed by the League of American Bicyclists in 2009. Since the award’s inception, fewer than 130 communities in the United States have received an award. The national program conducts extensive audits of cities bicycle programs and facilities. San Josés existing bike network includes 250 miles of bike lanes, trails, and routes. San José originally received the award in 2006. Since then, the San José approved the "Bike Plan 2020" Masterplan that calls for 500 total miles of bikeways. San José looks forward to obtaining silver, gold, and eventually platinum-level Bicycle Friendly Community designation. For more information, see
