Persian New Year

  • Date: 03/20/2022 (all day)

Nowruz - or "New Day" in English is the Persian New Year celebration, which has been celebrated worldwide for over 3,000 years by Iranians, along with other ethno-linguistic groups. This 13 day celebration often sees families spending the weeks leading up to Nowruz cleaning their homes in a process known in Farsi as khaneh takani or "shaking the house" as a way to say goodbye to the old year and start the new year off on a clean slate. One of the most notable festivities tied to the new year is Charharshanbe Suri, or the "Festival of Fire," held on the eve of the last Wednesday of the Persian calendar year which includes jumping over bonfires. Sizdah Be-dar, or "Nature's Day," where families spend the entire day outdoors and usually picnic, is celebrated on the 13th day after Nowruz and marks the end of the celebrations. Many of the holiday's traditions have roots in Zoroastrianism, which was the dominant theology in the Persian Empire before the age of Islam. For Iranians, the return of spring and the end of winter symbolize the triumph of good over evil.
