Cesar Chavez Day

  • Date: 03/31/2022 (all day)
Cesar Chavez Day celebrates the birth and legacy of the civil rights and labor movement activist Cesar Chavez on March 31 every year. In recognition of his nonviolent activism and support of working people, Chavez was awarded the Presidential Freedom Medal posthumously in 1994. Beginning with his seminal organizing work in the Mayfair community in San Jose, Chavez went on to co-found the National Farm Workers Association (later the United Farm Workers/UFW) along with Dolores Huerta and and establish collective bargaining rights for farm workers as well as securing medical benefits, disability, pension and unemployment. Cesar’s motto, “Si se puede!” (“Yes, it can be done!”), embodies the uncommon legacy he left for people around the world. This holiday is to promote service to the community in honor of Cesar Chavez's life and work.
