Cambodian New Year

  • Date: 04/14/2022 (all day)
This marks the end of traditional harvest season in Cambodia. It is often referred as Khmer New Year.  It is celebrated for three days.  Falls on either April 13 or 14.  It is a time for Cambodians to take a break and celebrate their hard work during the harvest season. For day one of the new year, Cambodians do spring cleaning and cook food to welcome the new angel of the year. Day two is a day for remembering their elders, both living and the departed.  For the living, they pour holy water on their elders and kneel while handing gifts to the elders. For the departed, they bring food to the temples as remembrance. They also donate living essential items and money to the poor to honor the death. Day three, people build stupas of sands and are blessed by the monks for good luck. Throughout the new year, they play variety of traditional games with their neighbors, friends and family.  1) Date is the first day of the celebratory period.
