Helen: Medical Bills and Homelessness

Helen was just living her life when she received a devastating diagnosis of breast cancer. It was not only an enormous health scare, but also a heavy financial burden. Helen found it impossible to pay all her bills and afford housing. She enrolled in the City’s emergency interim housing program with a determined mindset to beat cancer and find permanent housing. Eight months later she got the great news her chemotherapy was successful. Her cancer was in remission.

Helen shifted her focus to working with her case manager to find stable housing. She never lost hope despite a lengthy search that included numerous obstacles. Her perseverance paid off when she was approved for a studio in downtown San José.

HomeFirst, which operates the interim housing site where Helen was staying, provided financial assistance to help cover Helen’s first month’s rent and deposit. They also gave her a move-In kit that included toiletries, bedding, and cleaning and kitchen supplies. Helen's journey has been an inspiration to us all. Congratulations Helen!
