Jerry: Exiting Homelessness on a Fixed Income
Jerry entered the City’s Bernal interim housing community eager and motivated to find permanent housing. He met with his case manager weekly to search for housing. Although he had a modest fixed income, his goal was to apply for at least one housing opportunity each week.
During his time in interim housing, he was pre-approved for numerous apartments, only to see his applications rejected due to high income requirements. Fortunately, Jerry’s case manager was able to help him identify ways to increase his fixed income, including his Social Security benefits.
This increase in income gave him additional motivation to continue pursuing permanent housing. Jerry’s persistence paid off when he was finally approved to move into a one-bedroom apartment at the Villa Hermosa Senior Apartments.
HomeFirst, one of the City’s nonprofit partners, was able to assist Jerry with his first month’s rent and security deposit. HomeFirst also provided move-in supplies. Jerry was beyond grateful for this new beginning and the opportunity to move forward in a positive direction. His advice for anyone going through tough times is to never give up. He truly believes good things come to those who keep pushing as hard as they can.
Congratulations Jerry! You are an inspiration to many people in our community!
