Melvin: Full-Time Work but Homeless

Following a lengthy stint of homelessness, Melvin was able to move into the City's Mabury interim housing site. He lived at Mabury for about a year.

Although he has full-time employment as a landscaper, it was difficult for him to find stable housing he could afford. Unfortunately, this is not unusual in an area with some of the highest housing costs in the country.

Melvin took advantage of the services and resources that nonprofit HomeFirst makes available to Mabury residents. He attended personal finance and life skills workshops, he worked closely with a case manager on his search for permanent housing, and he used a VTA Uplift pass to commute to work.

Early in 2024, Melvin received the life-changing news that one of his rental applications was accepted and he was able to move into his own apartment. Congratulations Melvin! You are an inspiration to many people who are living in interim housing today.
