To apply for a street tree planting, removal, or pruning permit, email treesandsidewalks@sanjoseca.gov. Please include your name, email address, property address, and a brief description of your request.

Goal

Permits are required to plant, prune, or remove street trees. The goal is to ensure that street trees are planted and pruned correctly according to established professional standards.

Fees

Permits are provided free of cost. Both property owners and tree care professionals must have a copy of the permit on site before any tree work may begin.

Other Trees

Trees outside of the public right of way are under the jurisdiction of Planning, Building and Code Enforcement, which has a separate tree removal permitting process. A permit is not required to plant or prune a tree outside of the public right-of-way.

Tree Policies

City policy regarding the proper procedures, care, and maintenance for street trees can be found in the Tree Policy Manual and Recommended Best Practices document.
