Fire Development Services Express Plan Review Appointments for small Sprinkler, Suppression and Alarm Projects
Virtual or In Person "Over the Counter" Fire Special Systems Express Plan Review Appointments
To better serve customers with projects that qualify for fire express review, you can schedule appointments for fire sprinkler and suppression or fire alarm and detection systems plan review on specific calendar days:
Fire sprinkler and suppression systems appointments:
- Available Tuesdays and Thursdays from 8 a.m.-3 p.m.
- 90 minutes in duration
Project Maximum Size Criteria
- This service is for tenant improvement projects that require the addition of less than 20 sprinkler heads
- Relocation of less than 100 sprinklers without having to recalculate the existing system
- Simple Fixed Extinguishing Systems (Hood & Duct) involving 3 or less hoods,
- Simple Underground Fire Service Systems involving 5 or less appurtenances
- Larger or more involved projects (including new construction), DO NOT QUALIFY for Fire Express Review.

Schedule a Virtual Fire Sprinkler and Suppression System Express Permit Plan Review Appointment: In a virtual appointment, you will be connected to a live Permit Specialists and Plan Reviewer, where you can share files and screens views, obtain help on file uploading on SJePlans, and have your plans reviewed without leaving your desk.
Schedule an In-Person Fire Sprinkler and Suppression System Express Permit Plan Review Appointment: You can choose an in-person appointment as well. Masks are required at all times when inside City Hall. Note, you will need a way to upload plans to SJePlans for permit application submittals, so bringing a media device like a laptop is highly recommended.
Fire alarm systems appointments:
- Only available on Wednesdays at 8 a.m., 1 p.m., and 3 p.m.
- 90 minutes in duration
Project Maximum Size Criteria
- This service is for tenant improvement projects that generally require the addition or relocation of a maximum of 12 devices and /or appliances (cumulative)
- Installation of a new communicator panel is allowed for Fire Alarm Express Review.
- Panel replacements and suppression panel installations DO NOT QUALIFY for express review
- Larger or more involved projects (including new construction), DO NOT QUALIFY for Fire Express Review.

Schedule a Virtual Fire Alarm System Express Permit Plan Review Appointment: No need to drive in. Save time, gas and masking by using Fire's new virtual appointments. You will be able to see and speak to a live Permit Specialists and Plan Reviewer, where you can share files and screens views, and obtain help on file uploading on SJePlans and have your plans reviewed without leaving your desk.
Schedule a Face to Face Fire Alarm System Express Permit Plan Review Appointment: You can choose to speak to person face-to-face by appointment, as well. Masks are required at all times when inside City Hall. Note, you will need a way to upload plans to SJePlans for permit application submittals, so bringing a media device like a laptop is highly recommended.
Plan review projects that don't qualify for express review can be submitted virtually or in-person,
Visit Fire Development (Construction) Permit Appointments to submit applications via regular plan review.
Note: Fire Inspections can be scheduled through call center at (408) 535-3555.

PREPARE FOR YOUR APPOINTMENT
- Please be ready with complete and accurate plans, applications, and documents for a successful project submittal.
- Have your media device, such as a laptop, with you during this appointment to upload files or go to websites, as needed.
- Have payment readily available
- Visit Fire SJePlans for details and training videos and
- For Permit Applications visit Fire Special Systems Permit Application or Hazardous Materials Systems Permit Application to download appropriate applications.
- San José Fire Department is no longer accepting paper plans.
