Dia de la Virgen de Guadalupe or Day of the Virgin of Guadalupe is when Latinos celebrate Nuestra Senora de Guadalupe (Our Lady of Guadalupe) with a mass ceremony and a traditional fair in her honor. Mary became the patron saint of Mexico in 1746 and the Día de la Virgen de Guadalupe became a national Mexican holiday in 1859. A few days earlier (Dec 8), a related observance is celebrated by some people. The Immaculate Conception observes the conception of the Blessed Virgin Mary free from original sin by virtue of the merits of her son Jesus Christ.
