Project Description: This historic survey is part of the preparation of the Saratoga Urban Village Plan. The urban village plan will be a consolidation of the Saratoga Avenue and the Paseo de Saratoga Urban Villages.
The survey project seeks to identify properties that appear to be significant and eligible for listing on the San José Historic Resources Inventory on the local, state, and/or national level or contribute to the historic fabric of San José. The survey effort will inform development policies and enable the City to consider the protection of significant cultural and historic properties.
Project Goals: The goal of the project is to identify older buildings and places in the Saratoga Urban Village Plan area and to document their history from the community’s perspective. This will inform the preparation of the urban village plan and will help decision-makers consider the protection of properties that are significant to the community and provide a distinct sense of place. Having historical resources readily identified in an area also reduces the work for historic resource evaluation as future development proposals are made.
The work is proceeding under the guidance of the City's Historic Preservation Officer as part of the City’s efforts to identify historic resources. The survey effort implements the adopted San José City Council Historic Survey Strategy which directed staff to proactively identify historic resources and to update the San José Historic Resources Inventory.
Meeting Purpose: With assistance from Architectural Resources Group, the City seeks to identify the untold stories of the survey area - including places, people, and buildings. We are looking to include the voices that have been previously underrecognized and underrepresented to develop a broader perspective of the community’s history. We want to hear the stories of long-time residents, community leaders, and everyday folks to document any historical narratives not represented in current studies, books, or evaluations.
We are seeking:
- Identification of community events, persons, and places (buildings and sites) important from the early twentieth century to around 1980.
- Shared stories from the early twentieth century to around 1980.
