EASTSIDE ALUM ROCK URBAN VILLAGE PLAN HISTORIC RESOURCES SURVEY

Project Description: The City of San José, in partnership with its consultant team Architectural Resources Group (ARG), is conducting a historic resources survey of the Eastside Alum Rock Urban Village Plan area. Historic resource surveys identify older buildings that help to tell the story of an important person, event, or way of constructing buildings. The work involves looking at what’s on the ground through fieldwork and discovering the stories behind places through research and community engagement. This project is a part of the preparation of the Eastside Alum Rock Urban Village Plan that is envisioned to connect to the future 28th Street/Little Portugal BART station.

Project Goal: To identify older buildings and places in the Eastside Alum Rock Urban Village Plan area and to record their history from the community’s perspective. This will inform the preparation of the urban village plan and will help decision-makers consider the protection of properties that are significant to the community and provide a distinct sense of place. Having historical properties readily identified in an area also reduces the work for historic resource evaluation as future development proposals are made.

Meeting Purpose: To hear the untold stories of the survey area - including places, people, and buildings. We are looking to include the voices that have been previously underrecognized and underrepresented to develop a broader perspective of the community’s history. We want to hear the stories of long-time residents, community leaders, and everyday folks to record any historical narratives not represented in current studies, books, or evaluations.
