San José Has New Council District Boundaries Due to Required Redistricting

SAN JOSE, Calif. (February 24, 2022) – As of February 11, 2022, San José has new Council District boundaries. The boundaries changed due to redistricting – the required process of redrawing the political boundaries for elective offices. This process takes place once every ten years, after the U.S. Census, with a goal of equalizing population among districts.

City Council appointed a 11-member Redistricting Advisory Commission to oversee the process of redrawing the Council District boundaries. The Commission included one member per Council District nominated by the Councilmember, and a Chair nominated by the Mayor.

Following a nine-month process of analyzing Census data, weighing redistricting options, and seeking public input through public hearings held in every Council District, the Commission made recommendations to City Council. The final redistricting plan was approved by the City Council on January 11, 2022. San José’s redistricting process is now complete, and the new Council District boundaries went into effect on February 11, 2022.

All of San José’s Council Districts were affected by redistricting. Districts 2, 3, 6 and 10 have the biggest changes. A northeast section of District 10 moved into District 2 and most neighborhoods between Highway 85 and Santa Teresa County Park shifted from District 2 into District 10. Some southern portions of District 4 moved into Districts 3 and 5, and District 6 expanded to the northeast to include the neighborhoods north of the SAP center and around the Mineta San José International Airport, which were previously a part of downtown District 3.

In total, approximately 39,000 residential and business addresses now have new Council Districts. City services and programs will remain the same for these addresses, as will existing school districts.
