Safe Drop-Off and Pick-Up Reminders for School Zones
To keep everyone safe during drop-off and pick-up, please remember a few key rules. Follow the speed limits and always watch for kids crossing or biking. When using the curbs, remember:
If you can, try the “park a block, walk a block” approach. This helps reduce traffic near the school and gives kids a healthy start to the day. For more details on curb colors, parking rules, and traffic signs, check out these resources from the City of San José:
San José Parking Regulations – Learn more about parking rules across the city.
San José Street Signs and Striping – Understand the meaning of different street signs and curb markings.
Let’s work together to keep our school zones safe for all!
Driveway Safety Tips
Driveways can be surprisingly dangerous places, especially for young kids. Here are a few ways to make sure everyone stays safe around driveways:
-
Check Around the Car Before Moving – Always look around the car before you start to drive. Small children can be hard to see, especially if they’re behind the car or close to the sides.
-
Slow Down and Double-Check Mirrors – When pulling out, go slowly and check your mirrors and blind spots carefully. Some cars even have backup cameras, which can help, but it’s still important to look yourself.
-
Make Driveways Off-Limits for Play – Remind kids that driveways are not play areas. It's safest to find another spot where they can run around and have fun.
-
Get Kids In and Out on the Curb Side – When you park near a street or school, have kids get in and out on the side away from traffic to stay clear of other cars.
-
Teach Kids to Stay Clear – Help children understand that if they see a car moving, they should stand far away and never walk or run behind a car.
Driveway safety takes just a little extra attention, but it helps keep kids safe!
Asthma Education Program for Schools and Families
Breathe California offers asthma education for schools, daycares, and organizations throughout Santa Clara County, helping kids breathe easier and stay active. Walking and biking are great ways for kids to stay healthy, and they can also improve air quality by reducing traffic around schools—helping everyone breathe easier, especially kids with asthma.
The Asthma Program provides educational sessions for children ages 6-12, parents, caregivers, and health professionals. They offer flexible learning options with both on-demand virtual presentations and live Zoom sessions, where families can ask questions directly to an asthma specialist. Interactive sessions for kids include short, 20-minute lessons mixed with fun activities. For families with children and seniors who have severe or uncontrolled asthma, they also offer virtual indoor air quality assessments and home visits, using video platforms like FaceTime and Zoom, to help improve air quality at home or school.
Since its founding over a century ago, Breathe California has been committed to clean air and healthy lungs in the Bay Area.
