The City of San José was awarded a grant from the City Energy Project, a joint initiative between the Natural Resources Defense Council and the Institute for Market Transformation, funded by the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation.

Through 2018, the City will develop and implement a number of innovative energy efficiency programs and policies primarily in the large commercial building sector, with a strong emphasis on stakeholder engagement and building partnerships.

Project Initiatives

• Benchmarking & Transparency Policy Evaluation
  Engage stakeholders to evaluate a potential large building energy and water benchmarking and transparency policy to track building energy and water consumption through the Environmental Protection Agency’s free online portal, Energy Star Portfolio Manager, while considering additional policy strategies to further increase the efficiency of San José building stock. Please visit the Energy and Water Building Performance Ordinance page for information on the adopted ordinance.
• Zero Net Energy (ZNE) Building Resources
  Develop new resources to increase uptake of ZNC buildings in San José, including trainings, a demonstration, and exploring new incentive opportunities. Learn more about ZNC buildings and resources.
• Multifamily Retrofit Resources
  Explore barriers to multifamily sector uptake of energy efficiency upgrades and incentive programs. Staff gathered feedback from landlords, program providers and others, and will be evaluating results in 2018.
• Commercial Energy-Efficiency Financing Resources
  Promote energy efficiency incentives and financing options, such as Property Assessed Clean Energy. Learn more about energy and water efficiency upgrade financing.
• High-Performance Leasing Resources
  Develop new resources to provide the property management community with guidance on incorporating sustainability into lease agreements.
