The San José-Santa Clara Regional Wastewater Facility must meet the strict requirements of more than 30 federal, state, and regional regulations for treated water discharge, use of recycled water, disposal of biosolids, air emissions, safety requirements, and land use controls.

The Facility’s permit to treat and discharge wastewater into the San Francisco Bay is regulated by the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES), administered by the federal Environmental Protection Agency. Each year the Facility prepares a detailed Annual Self-Monitoring Report (see below) to maintain its permit and satisfy regulations. The report contains detailed information on flows, effluent, biosolids, water quality, capital projects, environmental and ecosystems health, fish and wildlife status, personnel, and many other topics.
