Operational Permits

An SJFD fire inspector walking with a customer.

SJFD’s Bureau of Fire Prevention conducts annual fire life safety and hazardous material inspections for all new and existing buildings, structures, and portions thereof within the City of San José. These state-mandated inspections include, but are not limited to:

  • Buildings used for public assembly
  • Buildings used for educational purposes
  • Businesses that use or store hazardous materials
  • High-rise structures
  • Institutional facilities
  • Multi-family residential dwellings
  • Other state fire clearance inspections

preparing for an INSPECTION

During a fire and life safety inspection for a permitted occupancy, an inspector will walk the property with the business owner or representative. The inspector will determine if there are fire code violations. They will also provide education about general fire code regulations.

If violations are identified, the inspector will issue a written "Notice of Violation." A reasonable time frame will be given to the permit holder to repair the issue based on the nature or severity of the violation(s). Life safety hazards require immediate correction once identified by the fire code official. If violations are not corrected or are of serious nature, the business and/or property owner may be subject to enforcement action.

Hazardous Materials Inspections

These facilities are to operate in accordance with the California Fire Code, the City of San José Hazardous Materials Storage Ordinance, and all applicable federal and state regulations based upon the specific occupancy classification and products on site.

SJFD is a Unidocs user. Most required forms for submittal can be accessed via the Unidocs website. The remaining forms can be found on our Bureau of Fire Prevention Resources webpage.

FIRE SAFETY CLEARANCE INSPECTIONs

Businesses that would like to schedule a fire clearance inspection or are seeking occupancy load signs (with less than 49 persons) can request an inspection by calling 408-535-7750 or emailing sjfd.bfpsolutions@sanjoseca.gov.

SJFD is required to ensure the occupancy meets all applicable state and local codes and ordinances to verify that the proposed building is approved for its intended use. After calling, inspections are assigned to an inspector who will contact you to discuss any needed information prior to scheduling your inspection.
