COVID-19 Eviction Data

The State of California has a moratorium on residential evictions in effect through June 30, 2021. The law is known as SB 91. The moratorium includes several protections for renters during the COVID-19 pandemic, including protection from eviction before July 1, 2021, as a result of rent owed due to COVID-19-related financial hardships.

The Rent Stabilization Program has analyzed and mapped the Unlawful Detainers (i.e., eviction notices) that were submitted to the Housing Department from February 2020 to January 2021. The goals of this project were to:

  • Gain a better understanding of the reasons tenants are receiving Unlawful Detainers during the Eviction Moratorium;
  • Visualize the data in a way that helps policy makers see trends that can inform future policies related to evictions; and
  • Uncover possible correlations between COVID cases and eviction actions.
