About the Project

Background

PRNS completed the Master Plan for Alviso Park in 2018. Due to funding challenges, the City has not been able to fully implement the Master Plan. However, in 2024, PRNS completed Phase 1 of a multi-phase expansion project, which included the addition of a walking loop, two exercise pods, a new pollinator garden, and new trees.

Looking ahead, PRNS is working with the Alviso community to explore future projects to further expand and enhance outdoor recreation at this park. In July 2024, PRNS met with community partners to discuss potential concepts, such as adding an irrigated field and sport courts, and discussed how partner groups can fundraise to support project implementation.

Communities in San José has successfully advocated and fundraised for similar park projects. For example, last October, PRNS announced the opening of Mariposa Park in the Tropicana-Lanai neighborhood. Residents and community leaders from Latinos United for a New America (LUNA) and the Tropicana-Lanai Neighborhood Association championed the transformation of a vacant lot at Havana Drive and Midfield Avenue into a much-needed park. The park features a playground, open gathering spaces, and a 140-foot mural. This example shows how community led organizations can work in partnership with the City to advance park projects and align resources.
