Test Preparation

Park rangers

How to Prepare for Testing

Testing for a position as a peace officer Park Ranger requires preparation and study.
We recommend candidates read through the San José Department of Parks, Recreation and Neighborhood Services website to learn more about the Department. Candidates should visit the City of San José website for more information about the City of San José and the Park Ranger program.

Other excellent references to learn more about the Department and the Park Ranger Program include:

Park Ranger Ride-Alongs

The San José Park Ranger Program also encourages interested candidates to schedule a ride-along with one of our team members. A ride-along is a great opportunity to see the day to day duties of a Park Ranger and to speak directly to a Park Ranger to have your questions answered.

To schedule a ride-along, contact the Senior Ranger office at (408) 794-6200.

Oral Boards

The Oral Interview Process is a panel interview. The applicant will be asked five to eight questions that focus on key competencies, such as:
  • Preparation for a park ranger career
  • Problem solving
  • Cultural sensitivity
  • Communication skills
  • Customer Service
  • Knowledge of park operations
  • Knowledge of resource management
  • Knowledge of principles of interpretation
The panelists will generally consist of City and Department personnel and may include a supervisory level park ranger from an outside agency. Applicants who successfully complete the Oral Interview Process will proceed to the Secondary Oral Interview.

The Secondary Oral Interview panelists are two to three members of the Park Ranger programs command staff. This is a less structured interview where you will be asked 2 or 3 questions and there may be follow up questions to your answers.

Candidates who successfully complete the Application Process will be placed on a list of eligible candidates. Candidates selected to advance to the Background Investigation Process will be notified approximately 3 weeks later.
